Jeff Jacoby from the Boston Globe provides several good reasons why McCain is a good choice for conservatives, even "Reaganites" who have flocked to Romney as of late:
It is not news that much of the conservative base bitterly opposes John McCain and is appalled that the man they consider a Republican apostate could soon be the GOP's presidential nominee. From talk radio to the blogosphere to the conservative press, many on the right are outraged that what Mitt Romney last week called "the House that Reagan Built" -- the modern Republican Party -- might anoint as its standard-bearer the candidate who by their lights is the least likely to follow in the Gipper's footsteps.Conservatives bristle at the thought of a Republican president
who might raise income and payroll taxes. Or enlarge the federal
government instead of shrinking it. Or appoint Supreme Court justices
who are anything but strict constructionists. Or grant a blanket
amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Now, I don't believe that a President McCain would do any of
those things. But President Reagan did all of them.

Hmmm...I guess I'm not sure. See I'm inclined for Romney for the primaries, but I'm not totally sure what to do with the question if McCain wins the nomination.
McCain I think will have to realize that unless he starts being honest with conservatives a lot of them will stay home. Even then, some of them won't be willing to overlook his past. Then again, conservatives need to seriously do a cost-benefit analysis. How much damage will McCain really do to the GOP and how much do Republicans have to lose with a Democrat in the oval office? Maybe it would be better to prevent the party from shifting "conservatism" even further left, but I'm not totally convinced it would happen on a large enough scale as a direct result of McCain--even if it is something to consider.
Yes there is a possibility of the GOP regaining control of the legislatures in 2010 (chances aren't looking terribly promising for '08) if the Democrats do win the presidency, but there is no guarantee. And in the meantime, how much "damage" will be done that they'll have to deal with when they do get back in office. It is something to think about.

Sorry, still don't buy it. I got my call from McCain asking for his vote on Tuesday. He promised that as President he would do certain things. I just wondered what kept him from supporting those things over the past ten years. If he gets the nomination, all the main stream media who have fawned on the past several years will turn on him. I think we will see more article like Jacoby as people try to unite the GOP under the "any Republican is better than a Democrat" banner.
